There are lots of ways to learn your way around Second Life. Some involve interaction with a teacher, and some involve self-learning. I have no idea how long this resource has been available, but I just stumbled across it, and want to share it. It’s called Knowledge Port, and has not only many tutorials on various aspects of managing SL, but also many tools. Follow the SLurl, or just find it in Maryport.
When you first arrive, you’ll be at one of the common teleporters (you find this same style many places in SL). Touch (remember, that’s SLingo for “left-click”) the teleporter to step through the potential destinations, which include the Construction Zone, the Navigation Area, the Communication Center, and the Inspiration Space. Then right-click (which is SLingo for “right-click”) the teleporter and choose “Teleport” to go to your choice. Each area is color-coded so you can see at a glance the area included.
Some of the tutorials replicate the tutorials from Help Island and Orientation Island–which is just fine since a lot of people rushed through there and didn’t get it anyway. But there are also a lot of tutorials that weren’t there to begin with, so those who took their time getting through the entry to SL will still find useful info here.
“Magic Gates” are scattered throughout the Knowledge Port, which are simply teleporters that make use of the giving of Landmarks to take you to distant places. You get a handy reminder to create a Landmark for the Knowledge Port before you “go through a gate,” which is good, since there is no way to backtrack. Magic Gates are placed so as to be in proximity to the Knowledge Port areas of similar interest–they sort of become 3D Mind Maps.
