Maybe Barry will tell you a little more about this himself, but just to share a bit of news: he went to the endocrinologist in Knoxville for the first time yesterday, and really liked them. Very professional and very thorough, they were, and they talked straight with him but with humor, and without talking down to him—which is apparently really different from his experience with his former endocrinologist in Asheville.
The news was good and bad, depending on how you look at it. His “numbers” were really high compared to what is healthy, but they were so much better than what they had been when he was living in Asheville that we all thought he was making great progress. The doctor adjusted his insulin dosage and started him on a new meter, and he’s been religiously tracking his blood sugars and his meals. As a result, his blood sugar has been pretty much normal for about 36 hours or so.
Two things about that:
- He is so used to his blood sugar being high that when it was normal, he thought he was having low blood sugar, along with the shakes and everything. Because his new meter makes it so easy to check, he checked his blood sugar and found it was 105–which is a great reading, not low, just by comparison.
- For the first time in months he slept all through the night last night. He finally got some good rest. I can tell a difference in him already.
Let’s just say we are all very, very glad and very thankful.
